Blue Bombers Launch Scholarship Honouring Tyrone Jones

Tyrone meant so much to this football club and this is our way of saluting the legacy of such an important man and player to this organization, Tyrone was a man who touched so many people's lives and we hope this scholarship will continue to do so in years to come.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers will award an annual scholarship in the name of former linebacker Tyrone Jones, who died this week of brain cancer. He was 46.

The Blue Bombers will also pay tribute to Jones prior to their exhibition game Thursday against Montreal. Winnipeg players will also wear decals of Jones's No. 35 on the back of their helmets.

"Tyrone meant so much to this football club and this is our way of saluting the legacy of such an important man and player to this organization," Bombers president Lyle Bauer, himself a cancer survivor, said in a statement. "Tyrone was a man who touched so many people's lives and we hope this scholarship will continue to do so in years to come."

The scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior football player in Manitoba who will be pursuing post-secondary education. The Blue Bombers will work in conjunction with the Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association to choose the recipient.

The CFL club also said donations to the Tyrone Jones Scholarship can be sent to the Blue Bombers offices and cheques are payable to the Never Alone Foundation. Donations will also be collected at Thursday's game against the Alouettes.
